Ascension Island Commemorates 80th Anniversary of VJ Day

12 August 2025

Government, Press Release

On Friday, 15 August 2025, Ascension Island will commemorate the 80th Anniversary
of the end of the Second World War (VJ Day 80). The Ascension Island Government,
Royal Air Force, and United States Space Force invite all residents to come together
to honour the sacrifices and resilience shown during this pivotal time in history.

Island-Wide Two-Minute Silence
At 12:00 noon, all residents of Ascension Island are invited to observe an island-wide
two-minute silence. Just before 12:00 noon, the United States Space Force will sound
the mass notification siren, marking the start of the two-minute silence, to collectively
honour the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for our freedom.

Illumination of Key Buildings
In tribute to Ascension Island’s vital role during the Second World War, the Ascension
Island Government Building, and the flag pole area of the United States Space
Force Base will be illuminated in white light from 19:00 to 21:00, as we remember the
men and women who lived and worked on the island, maintaining critical
operations and supporting key Allied missions during the war.

Ascension Island’s Wartime Legacy
During the Second World War, Ascension Island was a strategic Allied stronghold in
the South Atlantic. Wideawake Airfield, established in 1942, became a vital refuelling
and transit hub for aircraft bound for European and African frontlines. The island also
played a key role in anti-submarine patrols and communications, helping secure the
success of Allied forces.

Remembering the End of the War
While VE Day 1945, marked the end of the Second World War in Europe, thousands
of British and Commonwealth troops continued, alongside our allies, to battle
against Japanese forces in Asia and the Pacific. Victory over Japan (VJ Day) was
declared on 15 August, marking the end of the Second World War, a day that
represents the resilience, sacrifices, and courage of those who fought for our
freedom.

Ascension’s Island community are invited to unite in honouring those who paid the
ultimate sacrifice to secure freedom and peace.
