Government, Press Release

In a powerful display of community spirit and determination, residents of Ascension Island came together with Tony Peters for the Stride Against Cancer charity walk, raising funds for the St Helena Cancer Support charity and Christmas gifts for nurses at the General Hospital (St Helena & Ascension).

The walk, led by visiting champion Tony Peters, began at Long Beach at 6:15am and ended at Pier Head around 9:00pm, covering a 40 mile route around the island. The journey took walkers through Georgetown, Cross Hill, English Bay, Two Boats, North East Bay, Green Mountain, Travellers Hill, the old NASA site, and the US Base, before finishing at the Pier. The walk was supported by Garreth Henry, who
drove the Mitie minibus, offering tired walkers a chance to rest and rejoin the route.

“We started with 10 people,” said participant Samantha, “but 3 dropped out at Two Boats and 1 at the playing field. David Beard had to leave for work. Yes. we jumped in the minibus here and there, apart from Tony,” Samantha added. “Tony walked up the mountain with Dawn from Encompass, while the rest of us followed on the bus. Tony jogged back down the mountain and walked through Travellers Hill to
the NASA building. Dawn joined Tony for return journey. We girls, Tatelyn Royles, Latisha Fowler, Wendy Harris, Karen Stroud and myself, joined them from the Motor Cross track all the way to Pier Head. Kimberly Peters, Jolene Leo, Kayleigh Henry and Di Henry joined from the US Base. We all arrived at the pier at the same time. Tracy Boe had our chicken plo waiting for us!” “I'm aching, one blister I have!”

The event was not only a physical challenge but also a heartfelt tribute to those affected by cancer and the hardworking nurses who care for the community. Organiser Tony Peters was praised for his leadership and stamina, completing the entire route and inspiring others to push through.

Special thanks to Tracy Boe for preparing a warm meal for the walkers, Garreth Henry for driving the bus and to all who participated, supported, or donated. The walk highlighted the strength and unity of Islanders when rallying behind a meaningful cause.
