Ascension Island Telecommunications Update
18 November 2025
Government, Press Release
The Ascension Island Government (AIG) wishes to provide an update on the future of telecommunications on the island. Following notice by Sure South Atlantic Ltd. (Sure) of its intention to cease its role as the on-island telecommunications provider on 28 February 2026, an extraordinary informal Island Council meeting was held on 12 November 2025 to further consider the matter.
After careful discussion, the Island Council supported the Governor’s proposal to not to accept the revised subsidy arrangements submitted by Sure and not to submit a counter proposal. The Island Council further supported the continued exploration of
alternative options for the future provision of mobile telecommunications services on Ascension Island and noted the risk of temporary disruption and/or teething problems as we work at pace to put in place the new arrangements. This decision was made with the long-term interests of the island in mind.
We understand how important connectivity is for daily life, work and staying in touch with loved ones. AIG is working closely with employing organisations and other stakeholders to find the best possible outcome for our community.
As this process moves forward, AIG will continue to keep you informed. Your trust and patience are greatly appreciated as we work together to secure a sustainable future for telecommunications on Ascension Island.
