Green Turtle on Long Beach

Ascension Island has recently been featured in Spanish newspaper, El País, following a recent media visit. The feature highlights how the island is home to the largest green turtle nesting site in the South Atlantic.

The article also reflects on the global recovery of green turtles, recently reclassified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature from “Endangered” to “Least Concern” following decades of conservation efforts. Laura Shearer, Head of the AIG Coastal Nature Reserve, is featured in the article, noting:

"These animals have been doing this since the time of the dinosaurs; it is a privilege to take care of them."

The article is now available to read online here.

The feature reinforces Ascension Island’s importance as a site of international environmental significance.
