The Ascension Island Government (AIG) is proud to announce the successful launch of the new Government-owned mobile network on Ascension Island. In less than three months, AIG has sourced, procured and built a modern high-speed mobile network, which is now live and providing coverage across the island.
The launch of Ascension Island Mobile (AIM) marks a significant step forward for the community, businesses and visitors, strengthening everyday connectivity and enabling emergency calls to be made even from the most remote parts of the island.
Rowan Laxton, Administrator of Ascension Island, said:
“This has been a truly global effort, from our network build partners Omnitouch and
their suppliers in Australia to the RAF, who supported the project through complex
logistics. Everyone involved worked with determination and at pace to ensure that
Ascension stays connected.
The completion of the network is just the start of this exciting journey. While further
testing and service releases will continue, this launch lays the foundations for a resilient,
modern communications service for the island, and I thank the community for their
patience and support throughout the transition.”
The new network will allow AIM customers to make calls and use data in areas where it wasn’t possible previously. More importantly, this also significantly improves the safety of the community with a network which will allow calls to be made to the emergency services from the remotest parts of the island.
This project was funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. AIG would also like to thank Sure South Atlantic for its many years of service to Ascension Island and for the valuable support given by the Sure team on Ascension during the transition to the new network.
