On Saturday, 08 November, the Ascension Island community came together to clear the island’s turtle nesting beaches of invasive plants and litter in readiness for the upcoming turtle season. As usual, there was an impressive turnout across the island!
On one of the sunniest days of the spring so far, a well-earned BBQ was provided for all beach cleaning volunteers at the historical turtle ponds at Long Beach. A big thank you to the USSF, V2X and the RAF for supporting the BBQ and to Clinton Lockem and Richie Joshua for their amazing work cooking for all the hungry volunteers!
We would also like to say a massive thank you to Robert Yon and Romeo Andaya (V2X) for co-ordinating beach cleans across Grubby, Springers and Dales beaches as well as their behind-the scenes support. The RAF have also committed to a clean of Turtle Shell Beach in the coming weeks to prepare the area for the return of nesting turtles which is much appreciated!
Thanks must also go to Peter Williams, Robert Thomas (Johnson) and their teams at the Ascension Island Government for supporting with vehicles and skips to make the day a success.
Lastly, our heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers whose commitment to protecting our beaches is invaluable in conserving Ascension’s turtle habitat. Your contributions are deeply appreciated!
