Ascension Island Government (AIG) is pleased to announce that Councillors Laura Shearer and Thomas Barnes have successfully represented Ascension at this year’s Joint Ministerial Council (JMC) in London.
About the JMC
Hosted by the UK Government, the JMC brings together elected leaders and representatives from the UK Overseas Territories alongside UK Ministers. The Council provides a key platform for consultation, collaboration, and strengthening the bonds between the UK and its Overseas Territories. The JMC was guided by the unifying theme ‘Protect, Grow, Sustain - Together’, and reinforced the relationship between the UK and the OTs as members of the British Family, built upon a strong commitment to partnership, mutual respect, and shared responsibility.
During the JMC, Minister Creagh officially launched the UK Overseas Biodiversity Strategy. The Strategy was widely applauded and welcomed by the Overseas Territories for the consultation and engagement of the OTs during its development, ensuring it reflects and addresses OT priorities. The new strategy is available here.
During their visit
Councillors Shearer and Barnes participated in a series of comprehensive bilateral meetings, detailed discussions and informative presentations, as well as a business networking lunch. The wide-ranging agenda fostered an informative and respectful dialogue, setting a clear path for strengthening our collective future through tangible partnerships.
Councillor Laura Shearer said:
“Attending this year’s JMC was a fantastic opportunity to showcase Ascension’s unique role and priorities. From meeting Minister Doughty and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper to a reception with His Majesty King Charles III, we highlighted our Marine Protected Area and cutting-edge wildlife research. It was an honour to ensure Ascension has a strong voice in these important discussions.”
Councillor Thomas Barnes added:
"Representing Ascension Island at the JMC for the first time was an honour. The schedule was busy but insightful, providing a chance to engage with UK Ministers and fellow Territory representatives. We explored shared priorities, from environmental stewardship to sustainable development, and highlighted Ascension’s unique role in the region. This experience has strengthened our connections with the UK and reinforced Ascension’s commitment to contributing positively to the Overseas Territories network."
