Help Protect Ascension Spurge at Sisters Peak

23 October 2025

Conservation, Press Release

The Ascension Spurge (Euphorbia origanoides) is an endemic plant that is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red Listed and protected under the Ascension Island Wildlife Protection Ordinance, 2013. This rare plant only grows in a handful of locations around the island. Sisters Peak supports a small population of plants which grow directly on the clinker and vary in size and colour. These plants can blend in with the surrounding background and be hard to spot.

This year’s annual plant census recorded a decline in their population at Sisters Peak. As the highest elevation site where the Ascension Spurge can be found, Sisters Peak represents an important ecological niche for this species. Ongoing conservation work is taking place to protect these plants from further loss. The below maps shows where you might encounter these rare plants.

The AIG Conservation and Fisheries Directorate asks the public to take extra caution in this area. To help protect this species, please do not step on or disturb any of these fragile plants.
