Marine Protected Area Management Plan Consultation Begins

17 November 2020

Conservation, Press Release

In August 2019 Ascension declared one of the world’s largest Marine Protected Areas (MPA) around the island to safeguard the territory’s amazing ocean environment. Since then the AIG Conservation and Fisheries Directorate have been working hard to prepare a management plan to determine the long-term management of the MPA. The management plan will set out what it is that the designation of this MPA is hoped to achieve and how it will be governed and managed, including what activities will be permitted within it.

The management plan is available here and comments can be sent to the Conservation Marine Team by email through conservationenquiries@ascension.gov.ac at any time between now and 18 December 2020.

Having the island community involved in how the MPA is run will be crucial to its success and so AIG particularly want to hear thoughts from those living in Ascension on what is contained in the plan. Public meetings to discuss the plan will therefore take place at 18:30 on Wednesday 18 November at the Saints Club and at 18:30 on Thursday 19 November at Two Boats Club.
